This is an in-depth study and survey of various construction assemblies employed in the construction industry. The course focuses on architectural detailing as it applies to the use of materials, material assemblies, and their components in the construction of buildings. Details of floor, interior and exterior walls, roof, and foundation assemblies, including materials and their responses to the elements and building loads, are explored.

Review of the fundamentals of sustainability in architecture. The course fosters the students' understanding of climate change resulting from current waste, water, and energy practices, and introduces them to innovative building materials, systems, and technologies to mitigate this change. The course introduces the criteria and technological tools used to measure, assess, and fund green buildings. Subject matter is discussed in lectures on theoretical foundations, supported by workshops and hands-on materials. Lectures include solar geometry, heat transfer in buildings, thermal properties of building materials, occupant comfort, vernacular techniques, passive heating, natural ventilation, and urban microclimate. Workshops, while students utilize computer simulations, include climate analysis, daylighting for light level and visual comfort, passive design for carbon footprint reduction, and occupant comfort.

This class will expand the student's knowledge of how to insert new technologies and construction into an existing building shell. This course will take a practical approach of how to evaluate, classify, and diagnose construction deficiencies of existing buildings. The lessons will utilize a step-by-step approach to documenting, detailing, restoring, and preserving existing buildings. The student will understand the appropriateness of preservation, renovation, and rehabilitation. This course will take a practical approach to evaluating and diagnosing construction deficiencies in existing buildings using material science and the understanding of inherent properties of building materials.

ARCH 3531 Building Technology IV

From 19th-century World’s Fairs to contemporary Venice Architecture Biennales, the presentation of architecture has a rich history in the field. This seminar introduces current questions about the ethics of showcasing architecture. In the course, students will examine how architecture has been represented, moved, copied, invented, and displayed within contained environments as a form of epistemology. Students will analyze examples from the history of architectural exhibitions and learn about the logistics of temporary installations. We will explore the history of architecture in exhibitions and museums, visit museums as a class, write reviews, and complete a semester-long design project proposing an architectural exhibition.
