This is an in-depth study and survey of various construction assemblies employed in the construction industry. The course focuses on architectural detailing as it applies to the use of materials, material assemblies, and their components in the construction of buildings. Details of floor, interior and exterior walls, roof, and foundation assemblies, including materials and their responses to the elements and building loads, are explored.

ARCH 2381 Structures 1; ARCH 3531 Building Technology IV

Review of the fundamentals of sustainability in architecture. The course fosters the students' understanding of climate change resulting from current waste, water, and energy practices, and introduces them to innovative building materials, systems, and technologies to mitigate this change. The course introduces the criteria and technological tools used to measure, assess, and fund green buildings. Subject matter is discussed in lectures on theoretical foundations, supported by workshops and hands-on materials. Lectures include solar geometry, heat transfer in buildings, thermal properties of building materials, occupant comfort, vernacular techniques, passive heating, natural ventilation, and urban microclimate. Workshops, while students utilize computer simulations, include climate analysis, daylighting for light level and visual comfort, passive design for carbon footprint reduction, and occupant comfort.

Every day, we are overloaded with a seemingly endless flow of information — social media feeds, news, advertising, emails, text messages. How do we know what information to pay attention to? Information design helps us navigate and understand our data-rich world. This interdisciplinary course explores how the information design process transforms data into meaning. Through hands-on, collaborative projects that highlight approaches from Computer Science, Communication Design, and Architecture, students will investigate the history and theory behind effective information design while employing user-centered practices.

ENG 1101

Assignment to field work/study situations of approximately eight to ten hours per week at one of the following: an architectural office; engineering office; interior design office; architecture, engineering or interior design branch of a municipal agency or corporate design office; construction administration or office practices branch of a construction firm, drafting position with a non-architectural firm subject to review. Each student will keep a log/journal to be shared in group seminars. Supervision will be by faculty and by the job supervisor.

The course explores traditional and contemporary Japanese architecture from tea houses to the latest architectural works by renowned Japanese architects. The elements and principles that make up traditional architecture are examined in relation to culture, materials, light, shadow, and nature.
